Gold Coast City Council Project
final university design project
brief:
To design a council building for Robina, Gold Coast, and to incorporate a public library and square to create a physical and conceptual connection between the council and the public.
design statement:
The aim of the design
is to create maximum public space, addressing Laver Drive and Robina station, preserving
existing trees on site, and encouraging more interaction between the community
and the council.
The main strategy is
to use the library as an anchor, functionally and physically, between the public
space and the council office, and between built form and nature. It is achieved
by merging the building into the terrain, producing an artificial landscape.
The sequence of
events takes place in a series of linked public
rooms: the main foyer, the plaza, the alleyway, and the courtyard.
Each space offers a unique quality; let it be professional, exciting,
leisurely, or tranquil; to suit the needs of all users.
The site is
landmarked by the foyers that address
the entrances. They are visually connected to each other by their volumes and
transparency. At night they are lit and become the beacons of the site.

urban recycling
This is a promotion poster for the Urban Recycling courses I took while studying in Sweden,
to my surprise the faculty used my collage on the front page !
The images are clips from a series of site photos I took in Malmö on various study trips. My focus was to enhance street life and diversity, by activating the street edge using mix-use, low-rise buildings with retail space on the ground floor, residential on the top. The key is to provide visual connection between street level and buildings, to allow maximum communication, direct or indirect. People are encouraged to set up smalle business and personalise their spaces, creating an interesting collage of elevations, breaking down the scale of often long, tedious roads. The street is a typology that can be duplicated across the city, vitalising and connecting the movement of people on bicycles and feet, discouraging the use of cars. With the constant activity and movement, the street will become a safer place, where conversations happen, and events are made. Public spaces start from the little gestures along the street, anywhere can become a meeting point, a gathering ground, a market, and a festival.

a norwegian retreat
this is a collage I made for my Norwegian friend Jeanette, when I visited her at her beautiful Norwegian cottage North of Oslo during Christmas 2010.
I kept a diary and sketched some of the moments that captivated me... including a traditional breakfast consisting of boiled eggs with caviar (out of a tube), brown goat cheese with berry jam ... those unique combination of flavours will stay with me as long as I can remember my Norwegian retreat ...
