good bye liao liao
This is a portrait of my father and Liao-liao,
his pet Myna. Liao-liao is an extremely loyal and intelligent bird, he sees my
father as his master, and follows him around like his shadow. Sitting on my
father’s shoulder, he observes the world as my father sees it. He can imitate
sounds (especially human speech) and loves showing off his growing vocabulary.
Spoilt like an only child, he is bathed daily, fed egg yolks and apples, and even
has a seat on the dining table. Sadly he flew away minutes
after this photo was taken, never to come back again.
I painted this for my father,
so that liao liao can be remembered forever on canvas.

baby orangutan
this is a painting I made for my friend gwen, who loves the orangutan.
her story tracks back to the days when she worked as a voluntary caretaker for orangutans in Borneo,
and looked after a baby orangutan for a few months ...
an experience she never forgot.
I thought by painting this baby orangutan would be like capturing a snapshot of that memory,
and make her smile whenever she sees it...
perhaps one day I will become a volunteer for the orangutans too!
... and have my own orangutan baby.

red
Experimenting with acrylics on canvas,

one mosquito was sacrificed during the making of these canvases.
he now rests in peace.
using a primary colour and repetitive strokes
creating different textures ...
evoking images of sand, waves, stars, windows, boats ...

one mosquito was sacrificed during the making of these canvases.
he now rests in peace.
